O'Donovan brothers split up for World Cup event in Rotterdam

The O'Donovan brothers have been split up for this month's Rowing World Cup III event in Rotterdam.

Rowing Ireland High-Performance Director, Antonio Maurogiovanni has announced the seven Irish crews that will compete in the Netherlands across the weekend of July 12th-14th.

Paul and Gary O'Donovan famously won Olympic silver in the lightweight men's double sculls (LM2x) in Rio in 2016, but haven't raced together in either of the World Cup events so far this year in Plovdiv and Poznan.

With Paul O'Donovan concentrating on his studies last month, Gary competed solo in the men's single sculls (LM1x) at the European Championships in Lucerne.

This month will see Paul return to the water but will be partnered by Skibbereen's Fintan McCarthy. McCarthy too has been separated from his brother having raced with twin Jake McCarthy in Lucerne.

Instead, Jake McCarthy and Gary O'Donovan will both compete separately in the lightweight men's single sculls (LM1x).

Maurogiovanni sees the World Cup event in Rotterdam as a vital step towards August's World Championships and also qualification for the Tokyo Olympics, "The team is well preparing under the coaching of Dominic Casey and David McGowan at the NRC and we will continue to monitor their preparation in order to make sure that all the crews will line up in Rotterdam at their best current shape.

European Championship gold medalist Sanita Puspure will look to continue her fine 2019 when she competes in the women's single sculls.

Ireland crews for World Cup III Rotterdam:

W1x: Sanita Puspure (OCBC)

W2-: Monika Dukarska (Killorglin RC) & Aileen Crowley (OCBC)

LW2x: Denise Walsh (Skibbereen) & Lydia Heaphy (Skibbereen)

LM1x: Gary O'Donovan (Skibbereen)

LM1x: Jake McCarthy (Skibbereen)

LM2x: Fintan McCarthy (Skibbereen) & Paul O'Donovan (UCD)
