Padraic Joyce to take over Galway's footballers

Padraic Joyce is set to be the next manager of Galway's senior footballers, after securing the nomination of their selection committee.

The two-time All-Ireland winning forward with the Tribesmen will be put forward for ratification on a three-year term next Friday night.

John Divilly, Micheal O'Domhnaill and John Concannon will form the 10-time All-Star winner's backroom team.

The 42-year-old led Galway to Connacht under-20 success this summer before their defeat to Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-finals.

Galway GAA have confirmed this evening that Joyce is now their preferred candidate to succeed Kevin Walsh, who stepped down last month:

"Following interviews for the position of Galway Senior Football Manager, the interview Committee will be recommending Padraic Joyce and his selectors John Divilly, Michéal Ó Domhnaill and John Concannon for ratification to the Management and County Committee at their meeting next week."

Walsh had stepped down last month after a summer where the Westerners failed to qualify for the Super 8s. They had won two Connacht titles and gained promotion to Division One of the League during his tenure.

Former Laois and Tipperary boss Liam Kearns had also been in the running for the position and Galway County Board have thanked the Kerry man "for his interest" and "wished him well in the future."
