This whole 'Piegate' controversy involving Wayne Shaw has left an unsavoury taste in my mouth. He has been fired by Sutton United for his part in the stunt which saw odds of 8/1 offered by bookies if he managed to be caught on TV eating a pie during the FA Cup game against Arsenal.

With all substitutes used, the 23 stone reserve goalie did the deed in the 83rd minute. Cue an investigation from the English FA and the UK gambling commission under integrity rules after it emerged some of Shaw's friends had availed of the odds.

So here's the deal.

The Sun sponsored Sutton for their fifth round tie, and the Sun's betting arm tweeted that they paid out a five figure sum following the game. London club Sutton will earn around a million pounds for their troubles in getting this far. The Sun are not even their regular sponsor. So the club had no qualms in accepting the newspaper's money.

A bookmaker offers the novelty bet; the player, who is never going to be in this situation in his life ever again, has a bit of craic and eats the pie. After all the build up and the interviews and the publicity given to Shaw, he has now served his purpose. He is chewed up and spat out and loses his job, after sleeping on a sofa 3 nights a week to do his bit to help the non league club as a community liaison officer. It leaves a sour taste and it just shows that the 'magic of the FA Cup', a competition which lost its lustre a long time ago, lacks romance even at the lower level.

Do the decent thing Sutton and give Wayne Shaw his job back. If you get fined, pay the fine on his behalf.

If Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan can agree on something, it must be right.
