Positive news for Munster as Joey Carbery steps up recovery

Munster say Joey Carbery has increased his training load further, as the outhalf edges closer to a return to competitive action.

The 25-year-old has been out of action for more than a year, to deal with a wrist injury, as well as a long-term ankle issue.

In recent weeks, the Irish international began to reintegrate with team training, and the province have provided a further short - but nonetheless positive - update this morning, stating: 'Joey Carbery is increasing his training load further as he continues his return from an ankle injury'.

However, they have stopped short of identifying a potential return date.

Carbery suffered an ankle injury prior to the World Cup in 2019, and despite having surgery following the tournament, his province confirmed they would stand him down for an indefinite period in August of last year.

Meanwhile, Munster have welcomed back a number of players from international duty, as they return to PRO14 action this Saturday, when they face Edinburgh at Murrayfield. Johann van Graan's side are 10 points clear at the top of Conference B, while second place Connacht are also in action this weekend, hosting Cardiff at the Sportsground.

Craig Casey, Andrew Conway, Shane Daly, Chris Farrell will all be available, having returned from the international bubble.

The province are also set to welcome back a number of wider squad players from injury this week.

"On the injury front, there is good news for Rhys Marshall (knee) as he has returned to training.

"Keynan Knox (knee) and Calvin Nash (thigh) will be reintroduced to training this week.

"Liam Coombes was removed with a head injury during Munster A’s clash with Connacht Eagles on Friday afternoon and will undergo the return-to-play protocols.

"Roman Salanoa (back) came through that match with no issues," they said.
