Torquator Tasso has won the the 100th running of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.

The 4-year-old is only the third ever German horse to win this showpiece of the flat season.

The 80/1 outsider was guided home by jockey Rene Piechulek ahead of the Dermot Weld trained Tarnawa and 5/2 favourite Hurrican Lane.

Heavy rain in Paris caused a slowly-run contest with King George and Derby winner Adayar taking up the running from the early pace-setter, the Aidan O'Brien trained Broome.

Conditions looked as if they were going to suit the favourite Hurricane Lane as Charlie Appleby's St Leger winner produced his challenge under James Doyle.

Ante-post favourite Tarnawa, for trainer Dermot Weld, joined the Godolphin duo in the closing stages.

A late run though from Marcel Weiss' huge outsider Torquator Tasso saw him pull clear to spring a massive surprise.

Speaking after the contest Dermot Weld assessed Tarnawa's performance.

"She's run a superb race and you saw the staying Tarnawa rather than the speed Tarnawa.

"Her speed was of limited value today. I honestly believe if we didn't have all that rain last night we would've won.

"She was in great order and hasn't let me down for a big run but second is a lonely place."

He also wouldn't be drawn on whether or not we'd see her back for another go next year's Arc.

"You could be spoiled again but that's all for the future.

"The Breeders' Cup Turf again or the Breeders' Cup fillies' and mares' would be considered next."
