Ryan McMenamin confirmed as new Fermanagh senior football boss

Three-time All-Ireland winning former Tyrone star Ryan McMenamin has been confirmed as the new Fermanagh senior football manager.

'Ricey' had been a member of Rory Gallagher's Erne County backroom team before the latter resigned from his role at the end of July.

That decision came after Fermanagh were knocked out of the championship by Ulster rivals Monaghan in Clones.

McMenamin had been recently linked with replacing Gallagher, and he was finally ratified to take up the position by the Fermanagh County Board last night.

The Dromore club-man is expected to formally complete his entire backroom team over the coming months, although his former Tyrone teammate Joe McMahon and former Derry Under-21 and Kilcoo manager Paul McIver will form part of that set-up.

McMahon is a former two-time All-Ireland winner himself as a player with Tyrone, while McIver piloted Kilcoo to three Down senior championship titles.

During his own playing career, McMenamin had some well-publicized on-pitch battles with Kerry legend Colm 'Gooch' Cooper.

Aside from the All-Ireland wins with Tyrone, McMenamin won a couple of senior club titles with Dromore. He also picked up five Ulster senior football championship titles, two National Leagues, and an All-Star over the course of his career. He retired from the inter-county game in 2012.

McMenamin has also represented Ireland in the International Rules series against Australia.

Gallagher had formed a key part of Donegal backroom teams alongside Jim McGuinness and took over his native county at the beginning of last year's campaign.

Fermanagh went on to reach their first Ulster final in ten years, before losing heavily to Declan Bonner's Donegal by twelve points and missing out on the Anglo-Celt Trophy.

They then lost by eleven points to Kildare in Navan in the final round of the qualifiers.

This year Fermanagh were 0-15 to 0-9 losers to Donegal in the quarter-final of the Ulster championship, before their four-point defeat to Monaghan in the qualifiers.

Fermanagh will be in Division Two of the Allianz National League for the 2020 campaign.
