Sterling and Belligham subjected to monkey chants in Budapest

Hungarian fans in Budapest have once again been involved in racist abuse of footballers.

England pair Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were both subjected to monkey chants by home fans at the Puskas Arena during their World Cup qualifier.

Sterling opened the scoring in the Group I contest with a goal ten-minutes after the break.

Hungarian supporters started their night by loudly booing the England team, as they took the knee in their continued fight against racism.

Meanwhile, Sterling was pelted by objects thrown by the crowd as he celebrated his goal.

Gareth Southgate's side won the game 4-0, with the other goals being scored by Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice.

The abuse of the England players is jus the latest in a string of racist and homophobic incidents involving Hungary fans.

UEFA imposed a two-game stadium ban on their supporters after racist chanting at Euro 2020, and the display of anti-LGBTQ banners inside the Puskas Arena during each of the games staged there.

Those games will not take place in the World Cup qualifiers, but in games under the direct jurisdiction of UEFA.

Speaking after the game, England manager Gareth Southgate said, '"I don't think our players can do anything more, in terms of getting the messaging out.

"It's up for other people now. They shouldn't be subjected to any form of racism."

He also added, "It's not fair to point finger at all Hungarian fans. It's similar to what we have at home."
