Troy Parrott and Nathan Collins given first Republic of Ireland call-ups

Mick McCarthy has named provisional 40-man Republic of Ireland squad for next month's UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier with Switzerland and the friendly with Bulgaria.

There's a first call-up for Tottenham's 17-year old forward Troy Parrott, and Stoke City's defender Nathan Collins.

Doncaster's former Cork City winger Kieran Sadlier also gets a maiden inclusion in the panel.

Following his move from Everton to Crystal Palace, James McCarthy is included in a McCarthy squad for the first time and could make a first Republic of Ireland appearance since October of 2016.

McCarthy told FAI TV his reasons for naming such an engorged squad, "I don't know what's going to happen between now and the next couple of games.

"We've got Saturday games, Tuesday games, Saturday and then the Saturday before me meet up. Players could get injured before we meet up."

There's no room for Caoimhín Kelleher among the four goalkeepers named by McCarthy, despite the fact the Cork stopper could make his Liverpool debut at the weekend.

Ireland welcome Switzerland to the Aviva for a crucial Euro 2020 qualifier on September 5, with the friendly against Bulgaria coming five-days later back at Lansdowne Road.

McCarthy's side begins the autumn top of Group D unbeaten on 10-points, but the manager is expecting the toughest test of the campaign so far, "Switzerland are a good side. They have been in the higher echelons of the top teams in Europe for the last number of years."
