Usyk beats Joshua on points, is new World Heavyweight Champion

Oleksandr Uysk of Ukraine has won the WBA, IBF and WBO World Heavyweight boxing titles after defeating Anthony Joshua on points in London.

Usyk earned a unanimous verdict on the judges' scorecards following the 12-round bout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The judges gave it 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 in favour of the 34-year-old former undisputed cruiserweight champion.

It was only Usyk's third fight at heavyweight.

British boxer Joshua does have the opportunity to fight Usyk in a rematch. It's second time Joshua has suffered a painful defeat - he lost to Andy Ruiz Junior in 2019.

The other World Heavyweight champion is Britain's Tyson Fury, who currently holds the WBC belt.

Fury will fight Deontay Wilder in a 'trilogy' bout in Nevada on October 9th.

An all-British fight between Fury and Joshua now seems remote following Usyk's deserved victory.

Uysk follows in the footsteps of Ukraine's Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Wladimir, who dominated the sport from 2004 to 2015.
