Wales lose Gareth Anscombe to ACL injury

Wales out-half Gareth Anscombe has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Ospreys number-10 sustained the injury in Sunday's 33-19 defeat to England in their first pre-tournament warm-up Test at Twickenham.

Wales Rugby Union say Anscombe will require further specialist reviews before they can determine his exact prognosis and the management of the injury.

It's the second major injury setback to befall Warren Gatland's side after a broken collarbone suffered in training ended number-8 Taulupe Faletau's hopes of making the plane to Japan.

Anscombe's absence leaves Dan Biggar as Wales' first-choice out-half heading into the World Cup. No direct replacement has been called into the squad, with Rhys Patchell and Jarrod Evans the remaining fly-halves in the panel.

Wales are due to face England again on Sunday, August 18 in another warm-up Test before back-to-back games with Ireland at the Aviva and the Principality.

At the World Cup itself, Wales are in Pool D and will face Georgia (September 23, Toyota), Australia (September 29, Chofu), Fiji (October 9, Oita) and Uruguay (October 13, Kumamoto).
