Fair play to Shane Lowry - the leading Irishman heading into day 2 of the US Open.

The Clara man carded an opening round of 69, to end the day on 1 under par.

That's just 4 shots off the lead held jointly by Sweden's Henrik Stenson and American Dustin Johnson.

The pair are one shot clear of the rest on 5-under. Rory McIlroy has work to do in his second round at the U.S Open.

The Down native finished 2 over par in his opening round at Chambers Bay. Ulster compatriot Graeme McDowell fared even worse, finishing 4 over. Golf is some leveller. Hackers will take some heart from the fact that even one of the greats Tiger Woods has off days. But he's had an incredible loss of form and has shot his worst ever score at the tournament. His 80 left him 10-over par.

It's the third time this year Woods has shot a round in the 80s, but he could still joke about fellow American Rickie Fowler - who did even worse on 11-over.

So fingers crossed for S Lowry this weekend. However watch out of a name for the future. At just 15 years, nine months and 21 days old, Cole Hammer is the third-youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Open. This 15-year-old shot 77 in the U.S. Open, an absurd 3 shots better than 14-time major winner Woods!  Will it be #HammerTime this weekend?! Maybe not but it could be another world number one in the making. Interesting insights about the youngster here.
