Zinedine Zidane has reportedly resigned his position as head coach at Real Madrid.

The news comes days after Real were pipped to the La Liga title by city rivals, Atletico Madrid.

It ends Zidane's second spell in charge at the Bernabeu, having returned to the post in March 2019. He led Real to the title last season.

During his original 27-month reign, he managed to win three UEFA Champions League trophies.

Midfielder Toni Kroos was dismissive of Zidane exit talk this week.

Speaking on his Einfach mal Luppen podcast, the Germany international said, "They didn't just say it here, it got to Germany that he'd already announced his departure, it was a complete lie.

"Zizou and me have a relationship that, without any doubt, he would have told me. I can't confirm it, I don't know how this will end, I can only say that it's fun working with Zidane."

Karim Benzema is another to believe Zidane would be staying for next season, telling L'Équipe, "If he leaves, he leaves... but for now I don't see Real Madrid without Zidane."

The French striker added, "He tells me when things are going well, but also when they're not.

"Whether in training or matches, he's always very open about it. He's very direct with me and that's why I respect him so much. That gives me confidence on the pitch.

"He's my coach, but he's like an older brother. He's always supported me, whether I'm doing well or not, and he's helped me to get better every year."
