A rally supporting the Raise the Roof initiative has taken place in Dublin today, calling for action on the housing crisis.

Thousands of protesters joined the demonstration demanding a radical change in the Government's housing policy.

The campaign is being organised by a coalition of trade unions, activist groups and charities.

Father Peter McVerry from the Peter McVerry Trust was among the speakers at a rally outside the GPO this afternoon.

Fr McVerry has described the housing situation as morphing from 'a crisis to catastrophe'.

Speaking at today's event, Anthony Flynn from Inner City Helping Homeless said they were protesting against the "atrocious housing and homeless conditions right across the country".

Musicians Damien Dempsey and Paddy Casey also performed during today's protest.
