Mona McSharry takes incredible bronze at European Short-Course Swimming Championships

Mona McSharry has sealed an incredible bronze medal in the 50 metres breaststroke at the European Short-Course Swimming Championships.

McSharry swam a time of 30.51 seconds in her heat earlier and moved through in eighth position overall to the semi-final, from where she qualified in 30.31 seconds.

The 19-year-old Sligo athlete then took bronze in the final in a new Irish senior record time of 29.87 seconds in Glasgow.

Longford's Darragh Greene swam a new personal best time of 26.89 in claiming the fifteenth spot in the men's 50 metres breaststroke.

In his semi-final Greene took .11 seconds off this morning's swim to finish in 26.78, unfortunately not enough to see him through to the final.

However, he does have his better events - the 100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke - to come tomorrow and Friday.

Danielle Hill swam in an incredible Irish senior record time in the 100 metres backstroke, after breaking the minute mark for the first time in this morning's heats.

Belfast star Hill smashed Melanie Nocher’s 2011 record of 59.30 in 58.62 seconds. Having broken the one minute mark for the first time earlier, she went one better in the semi-final, breaking 59 seconds for the first ever time.

Hill had been in sparkling form of late, breaking Irish records in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke last month.

Back to the 50m breaststroke, and Limerick's Eoin Corby swam a new Irish junior record time of 27.50

Niamh Coyne (31.10) and Liam Doyle (28.13) both swam personal best times, while 14-year old Molly Mayne made her senior debut with a swim of 31.93.

Ireland’s Men’s 4x50m freestyle relay of Shane Ryan, Curtis Coulter, Jack McMillan and Jordan Sloan broke the first Irish senior record of the championships, knocking three seconds off the previous mark of 1:30.26 set in 2009.

The quartet touched in 1:27.06 for 12th overall.

Ireland had a number of other impressive performances this morning from; Daniel Wiffen (3:50.91) and Robbie Powell (3:52.05) who cruised home to first and second in their 400m Freestyle heat in personal best times.

Jack McMillan was the fastest of the Irish in 3:46.23, Conor Ferguson was just .08 of a second shy of his 200m Backstroke Irish Record in 1:54.38, Amelia Kane swam a best time of 4:45.64 in the 400m IM. Finally, Paddy Johnston (54.62) and Cillian Melly (53.97) made senior debuts in best times in the 100m Butterfly and Brendan Hyland lead them in 52.00.
