Unions representing public sector workers are planning a 24-hour work stoppage next Thursday, the 12th of November.

Talks at the Workplace Relations Commission broke down late on Friday night, following 11 days of negotiations.

Chair of ICTU's Public Services Committee, Kevin Callinan, announced the plans this afternoon.

" I think it's fair to say that there was a lot of anger in the room that quickly turned to quiet determination.

"The decision is now to proceed with a one-day nationwide strike next Thursday, the 12th, not Wednesday, as has previously been reported.

"In addition to that, over the coming days, we will be looking at intensification of our work-to-rule.

It's thought the newly announced date has been chosen to coincide with a high-profile meeting of European leaders in Dublin next week, as part of Ireland's Presidency of the EU Council.

It follows a 24-hour work stoppage last month, which saw 300,000 public sector workers engaging in strike action on the 14th of October.

A further planned strike was suspended last month after the Taoiseach Micheál Martin intervened to set up an independent group to help facilitate the start of a talks process.
