The Dáil has heard calls for compulsory public inquiries into the deaths of babies and women in childbirth.

The calls come as inquiries continue into the deaths of two babies at Cavan General Hospital, and of a pregnant woman during surgery at the National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street in Dublin.

All three of the incidents are being investigated by internal inquiries at the respective hospitals.

However, of a panel of seven people investigating the death of the woman at the National Maternity Hospital, six members are from within the hospital itself.

The widower's solicitor says it is not appropriate for doctors to be investigating issues at their own hospitals.

In the Dáil today the Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin called for new rules so that inspections by the likes of HIQA should be automatic in such cases.

Enda Kenny says he is not opposed to external inquiries, but wants internal ones completed first.
