It's unlikely that schools will introduce Leaving Cert Science practicals at the moment.

An unpublished report from the State Exams Commission has found that 'it could not be recommended' to do so.

It says bringing school labs up to standard would cost hundreds of millions of euro.

A shortage of science teachers makes it difficult for schools to release staff to be external examiners, according to Irish Independent.

President of the ASTI, Breda Lynch, says more investment is needed in education to bring labs up to scratch.

She says "We have a huge problem with science laboratories around the country."

"They are not adequately equipped for this kind of work. We would love a practical element in science in the Leaving Cert."

"We're all for reform and chance and improving things. My understanding is that the students who were involved actually found it a very positive experience. They'd encourage it, as would the teachers."
