The Taoiseach says he still retains confidence in the Tánaiste, and has not sought her resignation.

It's after Fianna Fáil tabled a motion of no confidence in the Tánaiste over her handling of the Maurice McCabe controversy.

Fine Gael says this is in breach of the confidence and supply agreement it has with Fianna Fáil and would trigger an election - but Fianna Fáil says an election can be avoided if the Tánaiste resigns.

Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar are due to meet again tomorrow.

Speaking on RTÉ News after their first meeting earlier, the Taoiseach again expressed his confidence in the Tánaiste - and insisted an election can still be avoided.

He said: "I'm not going to be rushing to the Park over the weekend to dissolve the Dáil.

"If this Government falls, it will be because Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin and others combined to vote no confidence in a member of the Government."

At a meeting on Thursday night, Fine Gael unanimously passed a motion to stand firmly behind Ms Fitzgerald.

Leo Varadkar told the parliamentary party she was facing 'a trumped up charge' from the opposition.

The meeting also agreed Fine Gael does not want a general election.

This was echoed by Fine Gael's Patrick O’Donovan and Fianna Fail's Niall Collins.

"I've received phone call last night for people who are irate at the possibility of a general election in December or January", Mr O’Donovan said.

"The public do not want an election, the country doesn not need an election - but we are careering towards that unless the Tánaiste does that proper thing here, which is to resign", Deputy Collins added.

Sinn Féin has also tabled a motion of no confidence in Minister Fitzgerald, with the party's Pearse Doherty suggesting it is "up to Leo now whether he wants to walk this State into a general election".

Labour said it is on 'election footing' - but stressed there is still an opportunity for Fine Gael to 'reflect on the situation' and avoid a vote.
