Irish Ex-Smokers Outnumber Those Who Smoke

There are now more ex-smokers in Ireland than people who currently smoke.

The HSE has launched a new quit campaign today to try to reduce the 6-thousand people who die of tobacco related diseases here every year.

It aims to show people that you don't have to go it alone when trying to kick the habit - supports are available such as a helpline, text service and online information.

Research has shown that people who use supports are twice, or in some cases three times, more likely to give up smoking for good.

Around 8 per cent of those under 18 smoke , but this has dropped from 12 per cent four years ago.

Ireland is aiming to be tobacco free by 2025 - that means having less than 5 per cent of the population smoking.

Currently around 23 per cent of Irish people smoke.

The HSE is encouraging people to go to www.quit.ie or freephone 1800 201 203 for more information.
