He was stabbed on Duke Street in Athy early this morning

Gardai are appealing for information after a man was murdered in Athy.

The victim has been named as 34-year-old David Boland from Nurney, Co Kildare.

He was stabbed several times following a row on Duke Street at around 5.30am this morning.

The victim’s car was found partially burnt out nearby.

An incident room has been set up in Athy Garda Station.

Superintendent Martin Walker says someone drove the victim's car away from the scene.

"At this stage we have several lines of inquiry.

"There is a particular request I want to make and it relates to the vehicle owned by the injured party.

"It's a silver Audi - it was taken from the scene at approximately 5.30am by a person or persons unknown, and it was brought just up here to the back of the Garda station where it was burnt out and is still preserved".

Gardaí are asking anyone with information, particularly a group of young men who fled the scene, to come forward and help them with their investigations.

They can contact Athy Garda Station on 059-8634-210 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111.
