The 90s was an incredible decade in so many ways.

The decade that brought us the angst and anger of grunge, the bright young things of Brit Pop, the movies of Tarantino and the televisual tear jerking of Dawson and his deck shoes.

So it’s fair to say that the 90s brought us a feast for the eyes and ears... but what about what we were wearing when all this was going on?

We thought we’d make the picture go all wobbly again as we strum the time travel harp back two decades as we look at our 'favourite' 90s Fashion Trends.

1. Baggy Jeans

What can we say about XWorks and Eclipse jeans. For those who didn’t bear witness to their saggy billowy beauty... imagine if Ali Baba came back to join East 17!

They drove Irish parents to distraction as we were ordered to ‘pull up them feckin jeans’... they were of course entirely correct.

2. Scrunchies

The hair accessory that defined a decade. Scrunchies got their name from literally being a length of material (crushed velvet if you were fancy) scrunched into an elastic tie. Girls would often have a room filled with thousands of these with one for every occasion.

3. Tearaway Tracksuit Pants

If tracksuits were to gather and reminisce... the elders would look back on the 90s as being a glorious time for their species. Tracksuits were an essential... be they shiny or fabric, you simply could not be seen standing beside a random wall with your pals without one.

The tearaway tracksuit trousers were a bizarre outcome of this phenomenon. Serving no practical use, unless you planned on being in an accident and were thoughtful enough to make it easier for the paramedics to get at your wound then having buttons or zips up the side of your trousers was a useless inconvenience.

4. Checkered Shirts

The grunge era brought us some life defining music form the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam but as with any musical movement worth it's sonic salt, it had a dress code. Ripped jeans, an old wooly jumper that looks like it was raised in a moth factory and stretched between two tractors, converse and of course... a checkered shirt!

This was one of those items that was appropriated by both sexes and whilst many of us thought we looked like this...

but in reality....

5. The Choker Necklace

The 90s were the decade that it would have been wise to buy shares in Claire's Accessories.

Between scrunchies and bracelets, bobbins and earrings, gals had a veritable coterie of fandangles with which to adorn themselves.

The aptly titled choker necklace was as 90s as it gets!

6. Footwear!

The 90s had a shoe for every occasion and musical taste.

From the ankle loathing sky scraping Spice Girl nonsense which were essentially cinderblocks with laces, the flappy oversized and priced basketball boots and of course the simple beauty of a pair of oxblood docs.

Oxblood Doc Martins could be worn with anything and even kept your Mam happy as they were a sensible shoe that you could wear until your death.
