What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

In life we often look to those who came before us to guide the way and pass on what they've already learned.

According to a survey by Hidden Hearing, 8 in 10 Irish adults believe they learn a lot from older generations.

Whether it's your Mammy telling you to always be true to yourself, or your Grandad telling you to save for a rainy day, their life experience is priceless.

The survey is part of Hidden Hearing's celebration of older people during Positive Ageing week from September 27th to October 1st.

When surveyed, 7 in 10 adults said 'Your health is your wealth' is the piece of advice that had the biggest impact on them.

To be yourself and believe in yourself, to live in the moment and always trust your gut, to work hard, but remember it’s all about balance, and to prioritise your health and happiness also marked high on the words of wisdom.

Finance was also a big theme. Wise words around saving for a rainy day, budgeting carefully and remembering money isn't everything came up most frequently.

And when it comes to offering advice to your younger self, 'Be true to yourself and do what you want, not what you think others want' was the top sentiment they would share.

However, most people turn to their parents when looking for advice, with 6 in 10 adults trusting an older friend or family member most.

The survey showed the 12% of people had noticed their hearing worsening over the pandemic. Although, for many people the introduction of masks made them realise just how much they depend on lip-reading.

When asked what sound they would miss most, 64% of people said the voices of their friends and family.

Dolores Madden, Audiologist and Marketing Director at Hidden Hearing, says;

“Conversation, engaging with people, listening and learning are all core life experiences that rely on the ability to hear clearly. We lose out on a lot, if we don’t make a point of looking after our hearing”, the audiologist believes."

That is why during Positive Ageing week Hidden Hearing are encouraging those experiencing hearing loss to seek treatment.

Hidden Hearing clinics countrywide will be offering a 15% discount* on hearing aids, for a limited time only, for those booking appointments during Positive Ageing Week from Monday, September 27th.

We've learned the true value of connection over the past 18 months, so hearing loss should not make us feel even more isolated.
