Ronan Casey joined Anton for their weekly look through the pages of Ireland’s local newspapers, and they unearthed some incredible stories, not least the story of the lamb whose heart was born outside his body!

That story, Maa Maa Miracle Sheep, by Eoghan McConnell, is, er, one of the most heartwarming you’ll hear all year.

The lamb was born earlier this month with its heart beating outside its chest, and was saved by Cloghan Veterinary Clinic’s Ollie Keane. He was was stunned when the lamb was brought to him on Sunday, March 6. He had never seen anything like it, and he had no specific training on how to deal with it.

“As I held the beating heart in my hand I could see the entire organ was outside of the body. All the blood vessels ran back into the chest through an abnormal hole in the sternum,” he explained.

Both farmer and Vet were doubtful the lamb could survive but Ollie got the heart back into its rightful place and the lamb soon stood there continuously baa’ing at the lads loudly to be reunited with its mother!

“Apart from a few attempts to run away to find his mammy, the one hour old lamb was a perfect patient” Ollie said and the surgery was completed in about a half hour.

Elsewhere, Ronan had another lamb story by Jackie Keogh in the Southern Star about a daring cliff rescue by some rambling pensioners.

He also had stories about Gardai in Kingscourt a bizarre theft of a dishwasher which thieves emptied before robbing. There was thieves who attempted to steal a digger and trailer but forgot to get a powerful getaway car, as their 00 reg Astra failed to get their haul up the first hill they met.

There was the horrific tale of mysterious cycle lanes in Dundalk, nightclub dinners, the visit of Manuel Pellegrini, manager of the Manchester city soccer club to Kilkenny to check out property last weekend, straightening out the Ring of Kerry, the lag who threw his shopping at an ambulance, Tuam fuming over ‘hot smoke’ fire station pledge and this, a warning to us all:
