The Last Word attended the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska yesterday and Matt caught up with three female farmers who are tired of being referred to as 'farmer's wives.'

Imen McDonnell is a foodwriter, filmmaker and now farmer who blogs under the name 'Farmette'.

In a former life, she says she spent her days working in television, film and advertising production while living in Minneapolis, New York and Los Angeles.

Catherine O’Leary is based in Cork and is married to a farmer – Tim O’Leary.

For years she says she described herself as a ‘farmer’s wife’ and would always ask other women if ‘they worked outside the farm’.

Catherine says it was years before she realised that she was in fact a farmer herself.

Finally, we met Elaine Hall who was born on a farm, left when she was 17 and swore she would have nothing to do with farming ever again.

However, unfortunately her parents fell ill and she was given the family farm she says 'reluctantly' mainly because she was a woman.
