1 in 5 crimes reported to Gardai not recorded on PULSE

The Garda Commissioner says many other police services around the world are experiencing the same issues as the Gardai in recording data accurately - but that cannot be used as an excuse.

Noirin O'Sullivan made the comment after a recent review revealed nearly one in five crimes reported to Gardai in 2011 were not recorded on PULSE.

The Commissioner said it's important we have the correct processes and procedures in place, and they are adhered to by all members, so as to ensure all crimes are properly recorded.

The review was carried out following a Garda Inspectorate report last November, which highlighted systemic failures in how crimes were recorded on PULSE.

It revealed nearly one in five crimes reported to Gardai in 2011 were not recorded on the computer system.

3 per cent of crimes were incorrectly classified while 7 per cent were classified in a 'non crime' category when they should have been classified as a crime.
