107 people were prosecuted in May during the first lockdown as part of a Garda operation tackling domestic violence.

There has been an 18 per cent increase in the number of domestic violence-related calls to Gardaí this year compared with 2019.

Officers say they’ve made over 15 ,000 contacts to victims between January and October this year.

Gardaí began operation Faoiseamh in April to protect victims of domestic violence during the Covid -19 pandemic.

They've announced another phase of the operation to coincide with the second lockdown.

Gardaí say they will continue to make contact with victims to offer support and are reminding anyone that travel restrictions don’t apply in their case.

They say there will be a further drive to arrest and bring offenders, particularly those breaching orders, before the courts and deal with them quickly.
