A 13-year-old boy has drowned after falling into a river in Kildare.

The incident happened at the Lyreen river in Maynooth at around 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

It's understood the boy who died had gone into the water to help a friend who had fallen in.

He was taken to Crumlin Children's hospital but later died.

Two other children involved in the incident are being treated at the hospital.
