1,877 Learners Given Penalty Points For Driving Without A Qualified Driver

An average of nine learner-drivers get penalty points every day for not being accompanied by a fully qualified motorist.

1,877 learners got penalty points for the offence between January and July of this year.

That compares to 2,856 in all of 2021 - meaning there's been an increase of around 13 per cent this year.

Learners must have a fully qualified driver with them in the car at all times.

Otherwise, they face having their vehicle impounded, as well as a fine of up to €1,000, and up to four penalty points.

238 learners got penalty points for holding a mobile phone while driving in the first seven months of this year.

More than 2,100 learner drivers got points for speeding.
