A 30-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his father in Dublin on Sunday night.

Gareth Sheeran of Carriglea View in Firhouse is accused of murdering 65-year-old Harry Sheeran at the same address.

He was charged just after 11 o'clock last night and appeared before Tallaght District Court this morning.

The court heard that Mr. Sheeran made no reply when charged.

Wearing a black t-shirt and dark grey trousers, Mr. Sheeran remained silent throughout the hearing.

Judge Patricia McNamara granted him free legal aid and remanded him in custody for a week.

Judge McNamara also agreed to a request from Mr. Sheeran's solicitor Andrew Vallely that he receive appropriate medical treatment while in custody.

He will appear before Cloverhill District Court via video-link next Tuesday.
