400 secondary schools to close tomorrow over teachers' pay dispute

The Minister for Education has criticised the secondary school teachers union for deciding to go ahead with industrial action tomorrow at 400 schools across the country.

Minister Richard Bruton said the ASTI has effectively decided to close the schools indefinitely as a result of a row essentially over one hour a week of extra duties.

However the ASTI says they are only looking for a payment that is being made to other unions for substition and supervision, that was promised under the Haddington Road agreement.

Diarmaid de Paor, Deputy General Secretary of the ASTI, said their members are ready and willing to work tomorrow if they get this payment:
