A strike by Aer Lingus pilots could affect flights as early as next week.

Members of the Irish Airline Pilots Association (IALPA) may announce details of industrial action later today, in a row over pay.

Yesterday, they voted 99% in favour of industrial action, as they look for pay increases of nearly 24%.

They must give Aer Lingus at least seven days' notice.

Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, with Aer Lingus, Donal Moriarty, says industrial action would cause very significant disruption with flight cancellations.

"Aer Lingus will do everything we can to minimise that disruption for customers and we'll communicate very clearly with them.

"But IALPA are determined to do it, it seems. The last thing we want is disruption for our customers, but equally we can't be held to ransom by IALPA".

Finance Minister, Michael McGrath, is urging union reps and management at Aer Lingus to get back around the talks table to avoid strike action.

"We're coming into a very important season now, where for many individuals and families, this is the one opportunity in the year that they may have to get away.

"This dispute will get resolved sooner rather than later, so the earlier the discussions take place and a settlement can be agreed between the airline and the pilots' representatives the better, because the last thing that anybody wants to see is passengers being discommoded".
