Over 70 per cent of parents have to cover the cost of their child's third level education.

The study carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions shows almost two-thirds of parents are getting into debt to pay for college.

Parents are spending almost 4 thousand 500 euro a year to put their kids through college with 73 percent of families really struggling to cover the cost of their child’s third level education.

But the burden doesn’t just lie on the parents' shoulders, seven in ten students have a part time job to help them cover the costs of college, with almost a quarter skipping classes to go to work.

Tens of thousands of Leaving Cert students who got their results yesterday are due to get their first round CAO offers on Monday.
