82, 500 people gave up smoking in Ireland in the past year.

The figure is contained in the latest Healthy Ireland survey from the Department of Health, which each year gives a snapshot into the nation's health.

It shows 17 percent of people smoke, down from 20% last year, with the numbers highest among those aged between 25 and 34, unemployed people and those living in deprived areas.

The survey also found that three in five people in Ireland are either obese or overweight.

It shows only 37 percent of people are classed as being a 'normal' weight.

Men are 11 percent more likely to be obese or overweight than women while only half of people in the category say they're trying to lose weight.
