At least nine people are dead and more than 800 have been injured after an earthquake in southern Japan.

The 6-point-5 magnitude quake destroyed houses and buckled roads in the city of Kumamoto, when it hit yesterday afternoon.

There are fears people could be trapped under rubble - 16-hundred soldiers have been deployed to the area.
