Earlier in the week, Virgin Atlantic announced they were scrapping the rule which stated female cabin crew members were required to wear make up while on duty.

The airline will also provide female flight attendants with pants as part of their uniform. Prior to the move, pants were only available on request.

The move by Virgin Atlantic has been widely praised as a step forward in the fight for gender equality in the work place.

And now it seems Virgin Atlantic have had an effect on other airlines as Aer Lingus have confirmed to the Times Ireland Edition that they too would be getting rid of the archaic beauty standards and abolishing the rule that states their cabin crew must wear make up.

The introduction of pants instead of the previously compulsory skirt will also be rolled out.

Aer Lingus says:

“As part of the brand refresh announced in January we revealed a brand new uniform designed by renowned Irish designer Louise Kennedy which is being rolled out later this year.

The new uniform collection was designed in partnership with a number of our staff to reflect changing dress norms and to better meet the needs of our guest-facing colleagues.

The new uniform collection incorporates a range of wearer options including a trouser option for females and an ability to combine collection elements.

Aer Lingus uniform staff guidelines for the new uniform are currently being completed, but Aer Lingus can confirm that these will not include mandatory use of make-up.”
