The body representing middle-ranking Gardaí says it is considering pulling out of a new group set up to consider public pay.

The AGSI's decision follows that of rank-and-file Gardaí, who say they have no confidence in the chairman of the Public Service Pay Commission.

It's after Kevin Duffy said the threats of a Garda strike last month were "tantamount to mutiny", and insisted they were illegal.

AGSI president Antoinette Cunningham says the comments are ill-informed, and as a result the body will not make submissions to Duffy's new commission.

A full meeting of the AGSI's national executive will be held next month to consider the issue.

However the government is standing by the decision to name Duffy as the chairman of the group - insisting he is the best person for the role.
