Almost one in three female students report being sexually assaulted while in college.

The detail's part of a new Sexual Experiences Survey carried out among more than 6,000 third level students.

10 percent of male students and 28 percent of non-binary students also report non consensual sex.

More than half of female students also report they've never previously highlighted the incident because they thought it wasn't serious enough.

"The good news is that we're seeing an increase in colleges having consent classes, or workshops. And those people taking classes have greater awareness of services on their campus," said Roisin O'Donovan, who is vice-president of the Union of Students in Ireland.

"Those students filling in the survey, the one's where it was the first time they reported the incident about 50% were male, and 35% were females, while 25% were non-binary students."
