Antigen Testing In Primary Schools Begins Today While Mask Wearing Is Considered

Antigen testing for primary school children begins today.

Tests will be given to parents when a positive Covid case is detected in their child's pod, or where there's more than two cases in a class in a week.

Student teachers are also to begin working in primary schools from today, following a staffing crisis brought on by the pandemic.

Meanwhile mask wearing for primary pupils is expected to be endorsed at Cabinet tomorrow, following recent NPHET advice.

Labour's Education Spokesperson, Aodhan O'Riordan, is calling on the Department of Education to provide support to schools to roll out the new measures.

He's praised school committees who have been "leading the charge" since the start of the pandemic.

"But they're going to certainly need support from the department which has been certainly lacking  heretofore," he said.

Over the weekend, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the government would engage with schools on the issue, to help alleviate any anxiety surrounding the wearing of masks.
