The government is urging anyone camping today to pack up and go home as soon as possible.

The advice from government emergency officials comes ahead of the arrival of Storm Ellen tonight.

The National Directorate of Fire and Emergency Management Team says people should leave their campsite as soon as they can.

Local authorities are now deploying temporary flood defences and putting response staff on standby.

Keith Leonard National Director of Fire and Emergency Management, says it's not safe to be camping at this time:

We would advise people camping anywhere in the country today to pack up their tents and to go home as early as they can.

Mr Leonard is also asking these people to spread this message to anyone who may not be aware of tonight's weather warnings.

He said they should be told, "it's time to pack up the tents and seek shelter".
