The long-awaited Oireachtas banking inquiry officially gets up and running today.

The committee will hold a private meeting in Leinster House to begin working on the terms of reference for the mammoth inquiry.

However it's expected to be months before the first witnesses are called in.

After all of the furore about how many people would get to sit on it, today the banking inquiry finally gets down to work.

The group of seven TDs and four Senators will meet in a committee room in Leinster House to begin hammering out the inquiry's terms of reference.

That's expected to be a long process - and not one that will be finished any time soon.

Those rules will need to be signed off before public hearings can be held - and Fianna Fáil's Michael McGrath says that could be some time away:

Public hearings aren't expected until after the summer break - but members are keen to get the first hearings in before the end of 2014.
