The rental market in Ireland has been described as “not fit for purpose” by housing agency Threshold.

The charity released its annual report today which states one in five Irish families now live in rented accommodation.

Bob Jordan Chief Executive of Threshold says Ireland fairs badly in terms of EU standards for renters:

Threshold says more than 20,000 renters contacted them last year; the main issues were illegal eviction, deposit retention and poor quality accommodation.

The rent sector continues to grow, with pricing having risen by 25% since 2011. There are now twice as many tenants than there were ten years ago.

Tánaiste Joan Burton recently ruled out rent control as a means of stabilising the market, saying it was unconstitutional.

The Tánaiste's comments have been rejected by Threshold. The charity says what is needed is an 'NCT' for the housing market- so landlords must prove they're compiling with regulations.
