The maker of Barbie has unveiled its latest incarnation: a hijab-wearing doll.

Toy maker Mattel has unveiled the doll.

The company says it is to honour the first American Olympian to compete while wearing the garment, Ibtihaj Muhammad.

The doll was unveiled at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit in New York.

Ms Muhammad is the latest honoree as part of 'Barbie Shero' program that recognises women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls.

"Through playing with Barbie, I was able to imagine and dream about who I could become," Ibtihaj Muhammad said.

"I love that my relationship with Barbie has come full circle, and now I have my own doll wearing a hijab that the next generation of girls can use to play out their own dreams."

Sejal Shah Miller, vice president of global marketing for Barbie, added: "Barbie is celebrating Ibtihaj not only for her accolades as an Olympian, but for embracing what makes her stand out.

"Ibtihaj is an inspiration to countless girls who never saw themselves represented, and by honouring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything."

Mattel say the doll will be available to buy from next year.
