Almost 34,000 products were stopped from entering the Irish market over safety concerns last year.

The product safety orders were imposed by Competition and Consumer Protection Commission which has released its first annual report.

The Commission also says it has concerns about the second hand motor sector.

In 2015, the watchdog was contacted over 3,500 times about issues like motor financing, "car clocking" and the sale of crashed cars.

Other key points highlighted by the Commission in its new report:

  • 62 consumer enforcement actions against traders for breaches of consumer protection legislation

  • 74 allegations of competition law breaches reviewed and two large-scale investigations opened

  • One individual and an undertaking were charged with bid rigging offences following an investigation by the CCPC
