Coronavirus: 25 Further Deaths In Ireland

Twenty-five more people have died from the coronavirus here, according to the latest figures.

These are made up of 10 women and 15 men.

Thirteen of the deaths were in the east of the countryeight in the north, two in the south and two in the west.

While 18 of the 25 patients were said to have underlying health conditions.

There have also been 365 more cases.

The overall death toll here is now 235, while the number of cases stands at 6,074.

Some 168 of the deaths have been in a hospital.

Analysis of the cases so far, as of midnight April 6th, shows:

  • 46% are men and 53% are women, with 299 clusters involving 1,288 cases
  • The median age of confirmed cases is 48 years
  • 1,472 cases (25%) have been hospitalised
  • Of those hospitalised, 224 cases have been admitted to ICU
  • 1,568 cases are associated with healthcare workers

Dublin has the highest number of cases at 3,268, (55% of all cases) - followed by Cork with 431 cases (7%).

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "Ireland continues to follow ECDC [European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control] guidance with regards to testing, contact tracing and the implementation of community measures such as physical distancing and cocooning.

"This is the most effective way we have of slowing down the spread of this virus and saving lives.

"Our public health guidance is under constant review and the National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again on Friday morning to review the impact of ongoing measures."

It comes amid another surge in COVID-19 related deaths in the UK.

Five more deaths were recorded in Northern Ireland, bringing the total there 78.

Some 828 coronavirus patients have died in hospital in England, taking the total there to 6,483.

A further 70 deaths were registered in Scotland and 33 in Wales.

The total UK death toll now stands at 7,097.

The country's Prime Minister Boris Johnson is still in intensive care, but is said to be responding to treatment.

He was admitted to hospital in London on Sunday night for tests, after continuing to show symptoms.

He was moved to intensive care on Monday night after his condition worsened.
