Planning permission has been granted for a drug injection facility on Dublin's Merchant's Quay by An Board Pleanála.

Initially it will operate for 18 months on a trial basis, at the existing Merchant's Quay offices.

The service will then be reviewed after this period.

The project includes demolition of part of the existing offices at the site and a reconfiguration.

The planned medically suervised injection centre will be at a basement level.

Dr. Garret McGovern is a GP specialising in addiction medicine and believes it will give much needed support:

"In short, it will allow people - without stigma - to be able to go to a center with trained staff, be able to be given clean good works to be able to inject drugs.

"Those staff will also be trained in dealing with things like overdose, so there'll be on onsite naloxone.

"And also those staff will be able to give them all other advice and link them in with service."
