There have been 3,024 further confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Ireland.

While as of 8.00am, 458 patients are hospitalised with the virus - of which 90 are in ICU.

The Department of Health also says a computer glitch saw cases under-reported earlier this week.

It says a "technical issue" impacted processing of cases on Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR) on Tuesday.

CIDR is an information system developed to manage the surveillance and control of infectious diseases in Ireland.

It is a shared, national information system between the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), the Department of Health and others.

The department says this resulted in "an artificially low number" of notifications reported on Tuesday, and an elevated count on Wednesday.

It explains: "Given the impact on CIDR notifications for these days, the daily case numbers of 3,174 and 3,024 reported on the 3/11/2021 and 4/11/2021, respectively, are based on SARS-CoV-2 results uploaded to the COVID Care Tracker.

"The technical issue has been resolved and daily case reporting through CIDR will recommence in the coming days."

Meanwhile the HSE says hospitals remain under significant pressure due to COVID-19, but is not calling for more restrictions.

Demand for testing has risen by 20% in the last week, and around 16% of swabs are coming back positive.

'Unrelenting pressure'

HSE CEO Paul Reid says that while hospital numbers may be starting to level off, the system remains under strain.

"Daily, increasing levels of COVID in the community is causing significant and unrelenting pressure on the health system overall.

"And many aspects of it [are] under particular duress.

"We are at a level of transmission in the community that has forced many aspects of our response of our healthcare system overall into surge responses".

But he says the HSE is not seeking any further restrictions.

"The actions of the health service alone won't get us out of this current situation.

"If cases continue to rise, there comes a time when no additional testing, tracing, or vaccination or hospital beds or ICU will help to turn the tide.

"To be very clear, unless it's taken up differently, I am not - and the HSE is not - in any way calling for a need or requirement for further restrictions".
