The Department of Housing says it is working towards the reopening of construction from March 5th as long as it is safe to do so.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department says "“Since the beginning of the pandemic the construction sector showed great agility in adapting swiftly to public health measures and social distancing requirements."

It goes on to say "It’s clear that these measures have worked with no evidence the construction sector has been a driver of infections."

Most sites have been closed since January 8th.

Since then, thousands of construction workers have made claims for the pandemic unemployment payment.

The latest figures show over 62 thousand construction workers are in receipt of the PUP.

A Department of Housing Spokesperson has said "As Minister O’Brien said, we are working towards the reopening of construction from March 5th, once it is safe to do so. The Minister will of course monitor the situation between now and then and take any public health advice on board."
