"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett faces a charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false report claiming two men attacked him last month.
Smollett, a 36-year-old black, openly gay actor on the hip-hop TV drama “Empire,” created a storm on social media by telling police in January that two apparent Trump supporters attacked him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him.
However the victim soon became the suspect and Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct and filing a false police report after two brothers, who were earlier deemed the assailants, testified before a grand jury.
CCTV footage shows the brothers buying a red hat and ski mask, which the actor's alleged attackers were said to have been wearing.
The FBI is now investigating whether the actor sent himself threatening letters he claimed he received a week before the attack.
If Smollett is found guilty he could face one to three years in prison.Jussie Smollett
