Roscommon GAA is investigating following an alleged assault on a referee.

Footage circulating online appears to show the match official lying on the ground and receiving medical attention.

In a statement, Roscommon GAA said it "is aware of an incident involving a referee during an underage match at Ballyforan on Wednesday evening.

"We would like to wish the refer involved in this incident a speedy recovery.

"Roscommon GAA strongly condemns any behaviour that puts any of our match officials at risk.

"The CCC will commence a full investigation into the incident.

"We will not be making any further comment at this time."

It followed an exchange with an individual at an underage game in Ballyforan last night.

Roscommon GAA says it strongly condemns behaviour which puts officials at risk.

In a statement Junior Sports Minister Jack Chambers said, "I condemn the disgraceful incident that occurred at a minor GAA game.

"This matter needs to be investigated swiftly and in full by the GAA. Any individual found responsible for deliberately harming a match official needs to be held to account.

"My thoughts are with the referee who was hurt in the incident and I wish him a speedy recovery.

"Referees are central to sports and participation and our games simply cannot happen without them.

"A very strong message must go out that abuse of match officials is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by anyone in our game.

"Referees must be respected and protected in all our sports."
