Enda may support referendum to keep UK in EU

The Taoiseach has suggested he'll support a new referendum on the EU - if it's needed to stop Britain from leaving.

Enda Kenny says he will support David Cameron's calls for changes to how the EU works, as long as they're reasonable.

Britain's relationship with the EU is likely to be a huge factor in this year's general election, with the three most popular parties - the Conservatives, Labour and UKIP - all promising a referendum on whether the UK should pull out.

However the outgoing David Cameron says he'll only hold a referendum after entering new talks with his EU counterparts to discuss ways in which Brussels can give more decision-making powers back to national governments.

Any such deal would probably require a referendum in Ireland before it can be officially adopted - though today's comments from the Taoiseach suggest that a domestic referendum will be organised if it's needed to secure Britain's continued membership.

However the announcement has been attacked by the opposition - who say the Taoiseach is showing a deferential attitude to Westminster.
